The Whole Story
Other Team Members:
This piece we like to call "WAFFLE" is a modular bench designed using recycled hollow aluminium poles and an interlocking system that also doubles as the bench seat that has been constructed using 3mm layers of MDF. The two collars that hold the aluminium together are also designed using 3mm MDF that has been laser cut, layered up and laminated together to complete the design. The singular furniture pieces can be lifted and moved due to the lightweight aluminium, allowing the users of the WAFFLE piece to customize the layout to suit their specific needs. These arrangements can include, but are not limited to, a long bench, a U or L-shaped seat for conversation and collaboration or separate benches for isolation. The MDF benchtop pieces can also act as handles for the users to easily lift and move the pieces around. For the purpose of this exercise, our group designed and constructed three WAFFLE pieces, however due to the modularity and sculptural quality of the piece, we believe the WAFFLE design would suit public spaces where 20 pieces, 30 pieces or more could be installed and played with by the users to create interest and interaction with furniture design in public spaces. Please watch our process video for more information about the conceptual development and construction timeline of the WAFFLE design.
